Coal Exchange Building - Huntington, WV
The Viking Group assisted the new development team in reimagining this historic building as an extended stay hotel. Viking worked with the owners in developing conceptual plans, managed and performed building condition assessments, environmental studies and structural assessments. The team then performed a construction feasibility analysis, developed a construction timeline, construction budget, and assisted in receiving multiple grant awards while also procuring SHPO funding for the development of plans for emergency facade and structural repairs to the 13th and 14th floors of the building. This project will benefit the community of Huntington in multiple ways by providing employment, accommodations, historic preservation of a local landmark, and the redevelopment of downtown, which has multiple unused buildings. As an extended stay hotel, the Coal Exchange building will fulfill needs addressed in the City of Huntington’s comprehensive plan, such as hotel accommodations in the downtown core to support renewed tourism and activity in downtown and Marshall University, while also offering many stable jobs for local residents.
